Following the initial meeting of Roddy Woomble, Colin Newton and Rod Jones at Edinburgh University in the mid 90’s, the newly formed IDLEWILD put their student loans together and released their debut 7” single ‘Queen of the Troubled Teens’ in 1997. Now a decade later IDLEWILD release ‘Scottish Fiction’ (on Parlophone), a ‘best of’ that compiles some of their many musical highlights of the last 10 years.
It seems strange to think of IDLEWILD as veterans of the music scene but this is a band with 5 albums and a mini album to their name. Following their initial self-financed 7”, they released another single ‘Chandelier’ through maverick label, Fierce Panda and went on to make mini-album ‘Captain’ in 1998 released by Deceptive Records. Whilst early shows and that mini album captured the ferocity of their music and performance in their early stages, subsequent albums (after signing to Food/Parlophone) have revealed a songwriting ability that far surpasses the initial critical take on the band. This is a band with an incredible back catalogue and the track list for ‘Scottish Fiction’ resonates with a list of songs that encapsulate moments in time for any fan of ‘alternative’ guitar music in the last ten years. So you get ‘You Held The World In Your Arms’, ’Roseability’, ‘American English’ and the list goes on. Reviews for the band latest album ‘Make Another World’ have been as strong as any over the years, so this release really does just celebrate the first ten years of IDLEWILD recordings.
The 17 track CD will come packaged with a 3 hour DVD featuring a live concert filmed this year at the Aberdeen Music Hall, all the IDLEWILD videos and over an hour of unseen documentary footage filmed over the last twelve years. The band will be appearing at the forthcoming Connect Festival in Scotland (alongside Bjork, Beastie Boys, Primal Scream etc.) and also at Harewood House in Leeds with Iggy & The Stooges before heading out on a headlining tour in October.
