Misson: Man Band tracks a reality shows efforts to restore four former boy-banders to their chart-topping glory. RS Rock Reality Show Recaps track our efforts to be sympathetic to their cause. Heres our fourth report:
Thirty Mantastic Minutes In Five Sentences: And now the moment youve all been waiting for: The Man Band (a.k.a. Sureshot) are about to perform for the carnivorous masses at the halftime show for the Orlando Magic, despite being only given two days to learn their new “hit.” LFOs Rich Cronin, having botched the afternoon soundcheck, is forced to write the lyrics on his hand, a far cry from the cue cards and teleprompters of yesteryear. The performance goes pretty well, the Magic players wives seem to enjoy the show and all the bandmembers hit their respective notes. The boys are feeling good … for about five seconds, before the rain of boos pour down on them. Its not entirely Sureshots fault; The Magic were trailing the Dallas Mavericks by fifteen at halftime.
The Rockin Struggle: Can this show get any more depressing? The remainder of the episode is spent figuring out whether Katie McNeil is their manager or a VH1 spy intent on making the band suffer as much as possible. Case in point: just when the morale couldnt sink any lower, “Miss Katie” forces the group to listen to radio DJs ceaselessly deride them, and then makes the quartet watch excruciating footage of their performance at the Magic game.
The Funniest Moment: Too many to count. ‘NSYNCs Chris Kirkpatrick is slowly emerging as a comic genius. When the overly positive Miss Katie tells the band that they shouldnt be depressed about the Magic game, Kirkpatrick quickly fires back. “I dont think theres anything to be depressed about, except maybe 20,000 people booing.” Then there was producer Bryan Michael Coxs claim that he would not be part of a wack project. Too late. Underrated for his reality-TV performance is the Jeff Timmons of 98 Degrees, who sulks around the house all day with his “Maybe I should have married Jessica Simpson” face.
The Rockin Finale: The band learns that theyll have the chance to rebound off their ill-fated halftime show with a performance at Mansion, one of the hottest nightclubs in Miami. In the final scene, however, they call a band meeting to tell Miss Katie they want to fire her as manager. Will she stay? Will she go? Find out next week.
