The big announcements from Steve Jobs’ iPod/iTunes press conference in San Francisco have arrived: As expected, Apple is selling a touchscreen iPod which works like the iPhone, minus the phone part. The cool extra feature: it’s also an internet device with WiFi capability, and you can now buy songs over the air via what Apple calls the “iTunes WiFi Music Store.”
Also new: you can now purchase ringtones for the iPhone. You’ll be able to choose ringtone chunks of up to 30 seconds from songs you’ve already purchased from iTunes, and it will cost ninety-nine cents more on top of the cost of the song. Plus, there’s a new iPod Nano with video-playing capabilities. Stay tuned to rollingstone.com/rockdaily for more updates from the Apple event later today.
