The Good Life - Help Wanted Nights CD/LP
There's something to be said for throwing down all the money you've won and laying all your cards on the table, face up. It's a gutsy move that takes a bit of courage, a bit of crazy, a bit of worry and a staunch belief that the outcome will be well worth the risk. Musically, The Good Life lives in a moment of that complexity. Led by Cursive's Tim Kasher (vocals, guitar), the band–featuring Roger Lewis (drums), Ryan Fox (guitar, keys) and Stefanie Drootin (bass)–creates bold songs that are not afraid of the mixed up emotions they describe, sometimes in vicious, heart-battering detail. The characters that inhabit The Good Life songs live on the precipices of courageous, crazy, worrisome and determined, throwing down the hand they’re playing in each relationship they’re trying to save or hoping to begin.
Recorded to tape by A.J. Mogis in Omaha, NE, the songs on the band's fourth LP Help Wanted Nights were written to take place in the same small-town bar, and were initially meant as the soundtrack to a Kasher-penned screenplay. Unlike 2004 LP Album of the Year’s start-to-finish narratives, these songs describe moments of raw emotion more than chronicle a linear tale. When it came time to prepare the tunes for the studio, The Good Life kept songs close to their original incarnations, spending long sessions on open, uncluttered arrangements. Achingly beautiful and sharply astute, Help Wanted Nights details human nature in the most honest way possible, taking risks without regret.

The third proper full length, simply titled Two Gallants, will be released on September 25. Pre-orders for the full length will ship from here on September 11. Head over to the online store now to sample two tracks from the record, or check back between September 11-25 when you will be able to listen to a stream of the full album. Two Gallants - Two Gallants
Childhood friends since age five, Adam Stephens and Tyson Vogel have sustained longevity that very few people, let alone band members, can claim. Merging intelligent lyrics that often integrate historical references and human experiences beyond their own familiarity, Two Gallants captivate listeners with their unique breed of folk, punk and blues.
As part of a pair of releases this year, the self-titled Two Gallants follows The Scenery of Farewell EP and marks the duo’s third full-length. Well known for their impassioned live sets and lengthy tour schedules, the recording may be the best translation of the duo's distinctive alchemy yet. Recorded at San Francisco's legendary Hyde Street studio and produced by Alex Newport, Two Gallants builds on the foundation laid by 2004's The Throes and 2006's What the Toll Tells. Stephens’s raw melodies and razor sharp vocals deliver haunting, dirgy poetics amidst Vogel’s synergistic drumming style and striking harmonies, further defining Two Gallants' sound.

3. Debut record from Georgie James, Places CD/LP, ready for September 25 release; tour dates set.

The debut album from Georgie James, the new project of former Q and Not U drummer John Davis and singer/songwriter Laura Burhenn, will be released on September 25. Places CD/LP will begin shipping from the online store on September 11. Two tracks are available for free download now in the online store. Also check back between September 11-25, when you will be able to listen to a stream of the entire record.
Fall touring for Georgie James kicks off next week in Europe. US dates begin on October 3. A full list of shows is below.
Georgie James - Places
Who is Georgie James? Add the Y of multi-instrumentalist John Davis (drummer of D.C.'s defunct Q And Not U), the X of singer-songwriter Laura Burhenn, and their combined knack for evocative production, inventive songwriting, and multi-part harmonies, and you're almost there. Mix in the duo's passion for 60s & 70s pop music including The Kinks, Richard & Linda Thompson, The Jam, Simon & Garfunkel, and some Shake Some Action-era Flamin' Groovies, and you've got it. While Georgie James may at first seem like a strange amalgam, everything fits together perfectly on their Saddle Creek debut, Places.
Georgie James entered Arlington, VA's Silver Sonya Studio in late summer 2006 to record its debut full-length with the production help of Beauty Pill's Chad Clark & Aloha's T.J. Lipple. Places finds Davis switching duties between drums, bass and guitars, while Burhenn takes turns at the Wurlitzer and the piano to create memorable indie pop that is gorgeously glam, focusing on bright melodies and strong vocal harmonies.

4. Art in Manila's Set the Woods on Fire CD out now; tour dates with Rilo Kiley and The Good Life announced.

The new project from Azure Ray's Orenda Fink, Art in Manila, has released their debut CD, Set the Woods on Fire. The record is now shipping from the online store, where you can also sample two tracks. The band also just shot a video for the title track. Check it out at the Set the Woods on Fire page at Saddle Creek or a video outlet near you.
Art in Manila will be touring with Rilo Kiley and The Good Life. Full dates are below.
Art in Manila - Set the Woods on Fire
Art in Manila is Orenda Fink, keyboardist/vocalist Adrianne Verhoeven (The Anniversary, Fourth of July), keyboardist Dan McCarthy (Mayday, McCarthy Trenching), guitarist Steve Bartolomei (Mal Madrigal, Mayday), bassist Ryan Fox (The Good Life) and drummer Corey Broman (Little Brazil, Son, Ambulance).
At times, Art in Manila travels the lush path set forth by Orenda's previous work, however, it is here subsumed with edge and backbone. The band flirts playfully with genre wanderlust without ever abandoning cohesion. Moody slow-burners follow four-to-the-floor rockers which butt up against serene ballads. And it all works. Orenda and company have deviated from their collective musical past without forsaking it, and in the process have conjured a powerful debut record.
More album and band info available on the Art in Manila page at Saddle Creek Records.
