Ryan Adams and Minnesota Just Can?t Seem To Get Along

Does Ryan Adams have a vendetta against the great state of Minnesota? Back in 2003, Adams played a remarkably bad concert at Minneapolis' First Avenue, the club that features in Prince's Purple Rain film. At that infamous show, Adams railed against the sound problems that marred the set, played several songs twice, and even had the audacity to trash on the Twin Cities' prodigal son, Paul Westerberg. So what does Adams do for an encore? While playing Thursday night at Minneapolis' State Theater, Adams once again complained about the venue's sound. Maybe the Land of 10,000 Lakes has statewide acoustic problems? Maybe Adams was just pissed to discover that the Timberwolves traded Kevin Garnett? Who knows?
Adams became so frustrated, he took turns between being a rock star and a roadie as he moved two monitors, his guitar pedals, and the location of the microphone. He ultimately cut the concert short after seventy minutes — which isn’t actually all that short — announcing to the crowd that “A Kiss Before I Go” would be his last song, and left the stage without an encore. Many in attendance booed when the lights abruptly came on. So how bad was the concert? Actually, not bad at all, according to the fans at the Ryan Adams Archive message board (the singer shut down his official message board back in October). Many posters blame a few volatile fans for antagonizing Adams, which caused Ryan to melt down faster than the New York Mets (maybe they suggested he was a sellout). So watch your tongues, Madison, Wisconsin: Adams is performing tonight.
