News - Guilty Pleasures--Your Thoughts Guilty Pleasures--Your Thoughts

Tonight I just don't give a damn/If the world is ending, I'm throwing the party.

Cobra Starship's new song, "Guilty Pleasure", details the band's lack of care of being a guilty pleasure. Hey, they may be guilty, but they're still a pleasure, right? Gabe and co. just want to have fun and make music that they like and to make you dance; they don't care if they're perceived as shallow because they're enjoying what they're doing. The song is a complete f*** you to people who talk down on the band; they're better than people who hate because they're doing what they love.

On the Internet (especially on sites like this one), people feel as though they need to maintain some sort of street cred when posting in order to not be seen as a loser or have bad taste. Go ahead and see what happens if you say you think Scott Stapp is a great lyricist and singer. Just watch the reaction when you unveil your love of The Same Old Blood Rush With A New Touch. You're going to get torn to shreds by AP.net's active community. At times like these, a common defense for people is that they're a guilty pleasure in an attempt to absolve themselves from further humiliation. People will bite their tongue about music they like because they don't want to be attacked.

We at AP.net want to know--why are you embarrassed to like what you like? What's to be ashamed of over the Internet?

You can't be wrong for having an opinion. You may have a stupid opinion in the eyes of many, but why should you sacrifice your own integrity to please the negative, vocal masses?

There's also the idea of pretending to like certain bands because it's the "cool" thing to do. Some will feign interest in a well-liked band or even force themselves to listen to the band enough that a liking of the band's music becomes unavoidable just to maintain a credibility in music taste. You can also see plenty of people in discussions of Radiohead saying, "They do nothing for me but I totally respect them." The same comes from classic bands such as Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. Why even bother participating in the conversation if they don't appeal to you?

For the second part of this question, we would like to know some of your guilty pleasures. Who are they and why do you feel guilty for liking them?

F*** 'em if they can't take a joke./I'm just playing.
