I introduced Dawn Kinnard to you all a little while ago when she performed at Manchester In The City. Well, after already getting some lovely coverage on Guardian Online and Q4 Music, Dawn received her first Radio 1 Spin last week. Her debut single Devils Flame will be released in late September. A perfect 'one to watch' for 2008.
DAWN KINNARD –DEVIL’S FLAME/ FORTUNE TELLER
Released on 21st January through Kensal Town Recordings
Dawn Kinnard will soon be a name on everyone’s lips and she is set to emerge as one of the great new talents of 2008. January sees the release of her stunning debut single, a limited 7” which perfectly showcases just how gifted she is. It was produced by Martin Terefe (Martha Wainwright/KT Tunstall/James Morrison) and so impressed was he with Kinnard that she became the first signing to his fledgling label, Kensal Town Recordings. The release also gives us a taster of her astonishing debut album “The Courtesy Fall” which follows in March.
The opener, ‘Devil’s Flame’ is edgy, confrontational, defiant and insightful. ‘Fortune Teller’ is the flip side of the coin - a dreamy, late night, sensuous love song, enveloped in Kinnard’s smoke and honey vocals, and which sees her channelling the troubled blues singers that so inspired her. Both are equally mesmerising.
Here are some facts that will soon be oft-repeated: Dawn Kinnard grew up in Pennsylvania in a church run by her Baptist preacher father. At sixteen she became obsessed with Elvis and swore never to marry as the only man for her – the King, of course – was dead.
By her early twenties she was riding her beloved Harley-Davidson cross-country under big skies and camping at night on the roadside until she sold it to finance the recording of her gorgeous star-kissed eponymous eight tracker in a makeshift studio she set up in her dad’s church. She moved to Nashville and was discovered by her manager singing in a bar. Her neighbour was Cerys Matthews and they spent many a night on the porch singing and playing guitar.
She trained as a hairdresser after failing to get together the money to take up her art school place. The first time she ever made her own clothes, she took an old shower curtain and turned it into a dress.
Dawn will be performing at The Regal Rooms in London on 9th December.
