Shaun Ryder is one of the most important English musicians and drug-takers of the past 20 years. Not only did his band the Happy Mondays turn acid house from an insular scene of London techno nerds (half of whom were really Psychic TV) into the biggest musical force in Europe, he single-handedly changed the face of British youth culture. As in its actual face. Where before, upon hearing the words “English kid,” most foreigners would immediately picture some wispy milquetoast in Morrissey glasses and a scarf, following the Mondays’ late 80s rise, that stereotype gave way to the current one of some guy with a bowl cut binge-drinking himself into oblivion while simultaneous high on cocaine, ecstasy, and any number of other “club drugs” in a field with thousands of identical drunkards dancing to some Digweed remix.
