According to PCWorld, San Franciscans are getting hooked up. With Wi-Fi that is. Meraki will be providing the entire city with free internet by setting up solar powered wireless repeaters on people's rooftops. Not everyone, of course, they are asking for volunteers. This is all part of their Free the Net program, an ad-supported approach to free internet for all. How the ads are integrated hasn't been made clear. This is a move in the right direction, though. This isn't publicly funded and has nothing to do with the government. Hooray! This new service in San Fran is an improvement on the existing Ozone program in Paris which offers free service to those who host repeaters and a small monthly fee for everyone else. As these things continue to catch on, we could all be using free internet in no time. BOOYAH!
