who knew?
In a new irrelevant study released Monday that makes you wonder how these 'researchers' keep getting funding, it was revealed that popular music contains references to drugs and alcohol. Shocked? Me too.
The only thing in this report that was somewhat enlightening was how the references are distributed. Apparently ROCK MUSIC is coming in a distant 4th behind Rap, Country and R&B. The only thing tamer is pop music.
Here's the numbers breakdown:
of the top 279 songs of 2005 (way to be quick), 33% contained explicit references to drugs and alcohol.
77% of rap songs contain explicit references
36% of country songs
20% of R&B/Hip Hop songs
14% of rock songs
9% of pop songs
While music is often a reflection of society, I don't think its really fair to say that drug use is on the rise just because ignorant rappers with too much money have nothing else to talk about. The country number is sort of surprising, but not really. I think more of what this tells us is that rock music is about something other than drugs and alcohol. It better be about sex and violence, or Tipper Gore may think she won.
