THE DIVINE COMEDY ANNOUNCED AS FINAL HEADLINERS FOR WYCHWOOD FESTIVAL 2008
Wychwood Festival 2008 is delighted to announce that the last of its three headline acts for this yearıs festival will be Northern Irelandıs cult, indie heroes The Divine Comedy, who will be closing Saturdayıs Independent Stage line-up. Critically-acclaimed throughout their career, The Divine Comedy have continued to push the boundaries of experimental indie music, not to mention the impressive list of writing credits notched up by ever-present founding member Neil Hannon. Joining The Divine Comedy as a Wychwood headliner are none-other-than Scottish identical twins The Proclaimers. Having shot to fame in 1987 following an appearance on The Tube, the bandıs single Letters From Americaı peaked at number three in the UK singles chart, while album This Is The Storyı achieved gold status. Already hailed as the ³best of the boutiques² by the UK media, Wychwood Festival 2008 takes place from 30 May - 1 June 2008 at Cheltenham Racecourse against the idyllic backdrop of the Prestbury Hills.
Recently added to Sundayıs Independent Stage billing is The Young Republic,
a group of eight musicians (five guys and three dolls...their words not ours), who have
already captured the hearts of the UK media with their delicious blend of Phil Spector-style
sparkle, power pop and jaunty country. Also added to the Independent stage line-up, this time on the Saturday, is the marvellously monikered Marcus Bonfanti & The Badboys and Oxfordıs very own eccentrics Stornoway who describe themselves as ³a living, breathing Mark Twain novel², which Wychwood commends!
Among the confirmations for the Big Top stage is upcoming actor and singer Karen David, who will be showcasing her sublime blend of Western pop and Indian melodies as
part of the Big Topıs Sunday line-up. Best known for her part in the Hollywood blockbuster
Batman Begins, Karenıs debut album is due for release soon. Joining Karen in the Big Top
on Sunday are Liverpool rockers Sleeping With The Fishes, melodic rockers Red Bullets and Wychwood veterans The Quiet Men, Oxfordshireıs self-confessed ³hardest working
ceilidh band². Confirmed for Saturdayıs Big Top line up is the critically acclaimed Mor
Karbasi, an Anglo-Israeli collective that has been hailed as purveyors of ³spine tingling gypsy music² by Londonıs Jewish Chronicle. Last but by no means least, the mighty Heavy Load return triumphantly to Wychwood Festival, having played their first major festival slot at Wychwood last year. The UKıs only disabled punk band was followed throughout 2007 by a BBC documentary team, the results of which are due to be broadcast in the autumn.
³The Divine Comedy epitomise the eclectic and experimental ethos of Wychwood Festival. Each year we strive to deliver a line-up that doesnıt conform to the stereotypical and formulaic and weıre delighted to welcome all the acts to the festival. We still have lots of exciting new things to announce and even at such an early stage, Wychwood 2008 is shaping up to be the best ever² enthused festival director Graeme Merrifield.
