Neil Young Goes Electric

Reinventing The Lincoln Continental

Neil Young is working with a mechanic in Wichita, Kansas to convert his 1959 Lincoln Continental into an electric car. Johnathan Goodwin has made a name for himself re-engineering cars to get more horsepower using less fuel, and has now teamed up with the legendary rocker to bring national attention to a possible solution to combat skyrocketing oil prices.

"The technology to make a practical and affordable electric car has been around for a long time," Goodwin said. "There are all sorts of ways of doing it and all sorts of ways to work out how to make it work on a national scale."

The goal is to provide a model for the first affordable mass produced electric vehicle. A 12-mile test for the engine prototype was successful, but there were a few minor glitches Goodwin is still working through as Young continues to bankroll the project.

"You know, I thought long ago you could change the world by writing songs," Young said. "But you can't change the world by writing songs. Oh, you can inspire a few people, get some of them to change their thinking about something. But you can't change the world by writing songs. But we could change it with this car."
