Stone Temple Pilots Ready To Go Indie
 

Stone Temple Pilots are currently being sued by their label home Atlantic Records over a record that hasn't even been made yet. Scott Weiland and drummer Eric Kretz had been rubbing labels the wrong way by publicly and privately saying they do not want to release under the Warner Music Group until some serious changes are made. They have not recorded an album together in 5 years and while they seem excited to get started, they have some demands. The label has responded through filing papers. Is STP being sued into silence? Absolutely not. The label is actually demanding they release more albums under the label.

I know I am always overjoyed to do business with people who file lawsuits against me. The band has released a statement regarding the lawsuit.

"Stone Temple Pilots were deeply disappointed to see that Atlantic filed a surprise lawsuit against two members of the legendary band ... when they were in the middle of what were believed to be cordial and positive discussions about STP returning to the studio to make a new album after 5 years," the statement read. "Despite the allegations in the complaint, the band never threatened anything more than remaining away from the studio until equitable terms could be arranged. The precipitous filing of this action is yet another example of the difficulties facing artists in the new music environment, as relationships between artists and their labels fall further and further apart.

"Eric and Scott have not yet been served and hope that Atlantic will allow cooler heads to prevail and have the courtesy of shelving this action to permit negotiations to continue in a positive spirit rather than under a dark cloud of hostility," the statement continued. "Should everyone operate in good faith, STP are certain that a new album from the band will be available soon. Should Atlantic instead pursue this scorched-earth policy towards the band, the ultimate victims will be STP's fans, who will never be able to enjoy a new album from the group."

STP is clear- give us what we want or we're breaking up and you get NO albums.

I think that being sued is not the way to go if a record label is trying to get a band to produce an album. Speaking of albums....Scott Weiland of STP is coming out with a new album Nov. 25 2008 titled "Happy In Galoshes."

So what if a band has expectations. What the band did was show that they know the direction they want to take with their record. I don't think they are in a position to be threatened since bands also needs as much time as possible to create a worthwhile album. Get along, PLEASE! It is hard enough as it is these days for bands and labels to get along when it comes to dowloading music off the web. Some bands don't approve and straight out tell their fans that and some allow users to do so since they feel they don't have control over what has been a shift in music consumption.

These days with the advancement of technology, internet users have been able to listen to music for free whether it is downloaded or provided by a music social networking site. So what am I trying to say. Well, there is a space, a division between music record labels and bands for many reasons such as the internet.

So, my point is that on top of all the problems bands deal with in order to survive are increased by situations like this where bands get sued. In the end, it sucks from both ends of the spectrum.
