Tribe Season
Thursday 17th July – Sunday 20th July
4 x 90 minutes shows
Man is a social creature and as such it has always been vital to be part of a group to ensure order, social acceptance and security. In today’s modern world, people still look to congregate into communities of like-minded individuals over hobbies, social causes or even their own safety. Launching on Thursday 17th July, Current TV’s Tribe Season explores what and who make up tribes in today’s urban environments.
Gone are the days of heredity or tribes of kinship - welcome to the colourful and buzzing world where people choose to bond over everything from shoes, to graffiti, who they like to date, how they like to dance or where they hang out. Spanning four nights, Tribe Season uncovers the coolest and most contemporary underground trends from around the globe while also investigating the issues that currently dominate our news agenda, from knife and gun crime to suicide pacts.
Underage Rockstars
This pod examines the all-ages gig culture in the UK in which musicians as young as 13 are suddenly finding success at a level that would make musicians twice their age green with envy...
Suicide Chat Rooms in Japan
The Japanese have always been at the forefront of the digital age, but it’s doubtful that the intended use for the internet was ever to seek suicide partners! Vanguard Journalist travels to Japan to uncover the truth behind ‘Suicide Chat Rooms’ whereby those potentially looking for a way out can locate a suicide partner through postings on bulletin boards. In some cases searchers have grouped together to poison themselves in cars with carbon monoxide. Speaking with two depressants that regularly search for someone to die with, will Adam uncover the motives behind this startling suicide culture?
Knife Crime London
With knife crime in London ever rising, this pod looks to investigate the reasons behind the recent increase in knife violence and how the police are tackling it. Meeting a young guy who was innocently caught up in trouble on his estate and resulted in being stabbed, the attitude on the streets seems to be ‘you have to protect yourself by any means necessary.’ Further opinions are sought from the local police and a community support group who shockingly reveals some of the youngest gang members have been just seven and eight…
The Neon Clan
The Neon Clan are a group of non-violent activists based in Paris whose mission is to rid the streets of energy wasting and visually offensive neon lights that currently cause light pollution in the city of love. Dressed in brightly coloured wigs, these urban activists go around the city simply flicking off the switches that power the neon eye sores. Through the media and their own website, the message has now spread to 25 other cities in France and around Europe - Will the UK be next to turn out the lights?
Urban Cougars
The dating world has certainly changed and women are in charge. “Cougars” are wealthy, beautiful women at their sexual peak who know what they want and how to get it. This pod also explores the men who actively seek out these Cougars -- they love their confidence and don’t play games like the younger girls out there. Dating younger is no longer reserved for men!
Monsters of Miami
Do sex offenders still have rights? A new law passed in Miami dictates that convicted sex offenders may not live within 2500ft of where children congregate. Most parents would agree that this is a sensible law but the reality condemns some 30 men to live under a bridge, as this is the only location that complies with the law. They have been to jail, passed through rehabilitation programs and in many cases been forgiven by their victims – is such squalor merely an extension to the sentences already served?
Sneaker Freakers
This group of fashion aficionados are shoe enthusiasts obsessed with getting hold of the latest and rarest sneakers. Some have up to 40 pairs, whilst others travel from as far a field as Hong Kong to come to London and line up at 5:00am just to ensure that they get their hands on the latest limited edition release. Whether it is Nike or Vans, Adidas or Reebok, these guys get their kicks from knowing that they have the freshest sneakers on the block.
Tecktonik
Break dancing crews have been battling to hip hop for years, now there is a new form of dance battle in Paris called Tecktonik. This crazy dance style is based around electronic music and uses very flexible arm movements. A movement that encompasses all, black and white, rich and poor – could this latest dance craze be about to sweep through the UK?
Save the South Bank
The Undercroft is the home of UK skateboarding but with more and more public space being given over to commercial business its very existence is now under threat. The area is a place for people to come together and watch or participate in what some may term “performance art”. It’s free, enjoyable and keeps many kids off the street as well as infuses life and energy into what would otherwise be a rather pedestrian area. Is it right to sell off this space to developers when many would argue that skateboarding is undoubtedly part of the rich South Bank heritage and London’s culture in general?
Gone Too Soon
Recent years continue to see gang culture in London spiral out of control with deaths from gun crime now over 40 a year, 10 years ago this toll was still in single digits. Our reporter depicts how the murder of 15 year old Clapham resident Billy Cox affected the community and how they feel about the police and media’s reactions. Is there a solution to stop the surge of violence?
