their first television appearance in more than 30 years
Comedy Central is rapidly becoming THE place to be seen for great musicians. Recently, in celebration of their new album Viva La Vida, Coldplay appeared on The Daily Show, performing multiple tracks off the record. Jon Stewart's right-wing counterpart, Stephen Colbert is known to be a music fan, frequently inviting music guests ranging from Tony Bennett to Neil Young to The Roots to play on his Bill O'Reilly parody program. Oh, and let's not forget the shred-off with challenge with The Decemberists, featuring Peter Frampton. While the appearance of musical guests is sporadic up to this point, critics are starting to become curious about the show's format, wondering if it slowly becoming more of a variety show than an over-the-top pundit parody.
A slew of upcoming music guests have been announced, but none more exciting than prog rock legends, Rush. Fans of the show know that one of the producers of The Colbert Report is a huge Rush fan, and references are often made to the prog rock masters. Although the band hasn't appeared live on television since 1975, somehow The Colbert Report has lured them back to the tube. As a Rush fan, myself, I can only hope that their appearance on The Report will expose them to a new generation of music fans. I'm not sure if the show is actually changing format, but Colbert seems to land some epic artists. Rush is no exception. Personally, I enjoy the occassional appearance of acts like R.E.M. and Carole King.
Rush's latest album Snakes and Arrows is in stores now, as is Snakes and Arrows Live.
The Rush Episode of The Colbert Report will air on Wednesday (7/16/08) at 11:30 EST on Comedy Central.
Crosby, Stills and Nash will be on the show July 30th.
