Brooklyn garage-pop darlings Sam Champion are set to release the divine Heavenly Bender on September 2nd, 2008. Following on the heels of their 100% gratis RCRD LBL EP, Bender is nothing short of a full-on reinvention and reinvigoration of their already-superb ’05 debut, Slow Rewind. Just ask the folks over at Stereogum, who freaked back in April when lead-leak “Like A Secret” corroborated talk of some hefty ‘tween-album evolution. Written and recorded in Brooklyn basements, home studios and creaky barns, the Champ’s second effort shows a new sonic vision; an expansive range of sounds and songs that’ll leave no earbud, Last.fm profile, or, uh, CD player(?) untainted. Heavenly Bender is still two months away, but the band has begun offering up tons of material. There’s the aforementioned “Like A Secret,” the earwormy lead-single “Be Mine Everyone,” and the Awesome & Modest helmed video for “You Can’t Stop,” wherein syrup, Christmas lights, cacti, flames, feathers, goldfish, cardboard cutouts and more frame and obscure a simple performance clip.

Oh, and if you like that, some little rag called Rolling Stone recently paid the band a visit to get a live take. Perched in the back of their van, “The Cobra,” a camera crew recorded the band running through an acoustic version of “Be Mine Everyone.” Nice, huh? In other Championship news, the band recently laid down a pair of spectacular performances – at Popped in Philly, and at Celebrate Brooklyn with Cold War Kids. They’ll be following these up on August 5th with a spot on the Rocks Off Boat Cruise, with Apollo Sunshine and Drug Rug, before embarking on a fall tour of the states.
