What do you really know about Denmark? It's a small country in northern Europe and the capital city is Copenhagen, right? They won the European football championships in 1992 with Peter Schmeichel and Brian Laudrup running riot, remember? And in the 8th - 11th centuries their Vikings conquered parts of the British Isles. But bygones being bygones, did you know that surveys compiled earlier this year ranked Denmark as "the happiest place in the world," based on standards of health, welfare, and education, and the 2nd most peaceful country in the world, according to the Global Peace Index? Perhaps that explains the smiles on the faces of Mimas, the latest post-rock wonder to rise from the musically prolific Scandinavia.
An often downbeat and reflective genre, Mimas don't bother themselves with such concerns. Track titles such as 'Cats On Fire', 'Beneath The Glad Sunbeam' and 'Dr Phil's Retirement' along with lyrics about fast food restaurants and sweat tell you that this is a band who are far from their often miserable counterparts. Sounding a little like a cross between fellow Danes Efterklang and Mew, and drawing influences from a wide range of indie, hip-hop and hardcore bands from right across the world, ‘The Worries' is everything the title isn't; it's a beautiful, relaxed record full of interesting ideas and an easy, almost carefree attitude towards their inspirations and surroundings.
Having already toured the UK three times, with a fourth trip planned to proceed the album release, the Danish quartet are no strangers to many music fans. Glowing write-ups from a number of influential online magazines including Drowned In Sound, Subba-Cultcha and The Silent Ballet, along with Radio One airplay from Huw Stephens, helped introduce Mimas as the latest in a long line of visiting European bands worth keeping an eye on. Take some time out, dust off the deck chair and spend a sunny afternoon in the company of ‘The Worries’,forgetting about yours.
’The Worries’, recorded with the help of Morten Bue (Arab Strab, The Kissaway Trail, Mew) will be released in the UK and Denmark via Big Scary Monsters Records on 6th October and the band play the following UK dates:
