RIP
John Rutsey, a founding member of the seminal Canadian rock band Rush, has died, his family announced. He was 55.
Rutsey played drums with Rush from 1968 to 1974, as well as on the band's eponymous debut album, but departed soon afterwards, apparently due to a lifelong illness stemming from diabetes.
In an obituary published in the Toronto Star, his family said his May 11 death was caused by "complications from his lifelong affliction with diabetes." Some news reports said Rutsey died from a heart attack in his sleep.
According to Rush's official biography, Rutsey was supposed to write the lyrics for the band's first album, but grew dissatisfied with his attempts and never completed them. He was replaced by Neil Peart, who remains as the band's drummer and lyricist.
Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson said Rutsey became a fitness fanatic after leaving the band and continued with have contact with Lifeson until the early 1990s. |

Interesting Stuff...
Whilst cruising through the tubes, I came across this strange post about a guy who has attached electrodes to his body to make music. Based on the video, there is still a long way to go before someone performs a grand masterpiece in this fashion, but the fact that someone is even TRYING is inspirational.

Saving music...one pancake at a time.
The well-known restaurant chain, Denny's, is embracing a large, but underrated percentage of their clientele- musicians. For any touring band, you've been to your fair share of Denny's restaurants, a popular late-night eatery for those with limited budgets. To support those who have supported them all these years with their post-bar patronage, Denny's is rolling out an Adopt-A-Band, where they provide free meals, promotional support, and concert after-parties for local bands like Foxy Shazam, Endeverafter, and Take The Crown. The menu’s also been spiced up for the rock crowd.
Look for the Denny’s Lounge at next week’s Sasquatch Fest in Washington state, too. If you want to get pics, prizes and updates from an adopted band, or want to get your own band adopted, try out Denny’s Allnighter site. |
Don't Do Dolly Like That
Last week Howard Stern manipulated and re-edited sound clips from Dolly Parton quotes “to make it appear the singer was making racist and sexually explicit remarks about Kenny Rogers, Linda Ronstadt, Johnny Carson and others.” Kristin Whittlesey says it wasn’t mildly upsetting either, it was so filthy and nasty that it can’t even be paraphrased. Parton felt “shocked, hurt and humiliated” by the segment.

Social D on Hold
SAVANNAH, Georgia (Billboard) - Social Distortion frontman Mike Ness is putting his primary band on hold for a spell while he spends the next few months on the road reviving the outlaw-country sounds of his two solo records.
The tour began April 29 in Solana Beach, California, and continues through July 5 at the Hootenanny in Irvine, California, with a band that includes Chris Lawrence on pedal steel, Jonny Wickersham on guitar, Brent Harding on bass and Dino Guerrero on drums. Austin singer-songwriter Jesse Dayton supports from May 5-26.
"I've been working pretty hard with Social D for the last five years," Ness tells Billboard.com. "And I've done a lot of press during that time, and it seems like it came up in every interview -- 'Are you gonna do (solo shows) again?' It made me really want to."
Ness' 1998 solo debut, "Cheating at Solitaire," featured both originals and covers of tracks such as "Long Black Veil" and "Don't Think Twice (It's Alright)"; Bruce Springsteen guested |
everyone's doin a musical these days
David Bowie has reportedly given the go-ahead for a musical based around his hits.
Director Peter Schaufuss is believed to have been given the singer's backing for a version of Bowie's cult sci-fi film 'The Man Who Fell To Earth'.
The production will weave the singer’s hits based around the storyline of the 1976 flick.
Schaufuss plans to launch the musical in his native Denmark this autumn, reports The Sun. |
