It's old news now though. Only account I have is a business account i.e. http://www.myspace.com/altsounds I by no means have a personal account because I think thats pretty gay. There was a little while there a year ago when myspace was cool. Now it has just become commercial crap and the only reason we remain on there is because it is good advertising to help promote altsounds.com. That's it.

From TOM, in defense of MySpace Records first compilation:

"first & foremost, i picked bands i liked. that was the number one criterion.

but i also tried to pick some major label bands, independent label acts, and unsigned artists so that people would buy it for the big ones and thus hear the less successful ones. if they were all unknown, no one would listen.

one of the things myspace does for musicians is expose the *casual* listener to a lot of independent and unsigned music. unlike the people posting in this forum (who care enough to think about music), most people have never been to a live show. most people don't know what an independent label is, and most people don't search out music on websites. myspace has changed that somewhat. ( i know a lot of people who had never seen a live show who now have because the band wrote to them on myspace. )

this CD has 4 unsigned bands on it, 7 bands on independents and 6 major label bands. one of the bands on a major hasn't even released their record. artists need a push at every level of their career - from major to indie to unsigned. many major labels sell less than 10, 000 records and remain unknown. to take one example, to say that "copeland" is a big band and thus not deserving of promotion is absurd. 99% of america does not know who copeland is. and 95% of myspace doesn't know either. they're a small band on an indie label. but more importantly - they have a good song that i liked, so i put it on this CD."

Where to begin... alright...clearly he doesn't think much of MySpace users..or America for that matter, because I don't think we are nearly as musically retarded as he accuses us of being. Also, how dare he think he has any indie cred at all after selling out to Fox and getting his label on a major. To me, the whole thing is just sad and pathetic... he's not a music biz guy. I mean it's great that we can all now hear Tom's favorite songs (after paying money for it), but I don't care what that douche bag listens to. There are a ton of great unsigned and signed bands on MySpace and he could have made a really great compilation that covered the whole spectrum of genres his site represents...but he chose to go for a broke ass version of The OC mix. He could have made a compilation that would give exposure to some awesome bands with bright futures and really helped them make a name for themselves... but he didn't. The unsigned bands he did pick are like OLD NEWS. Jupiter Sunrise- Arthur Nix...that song is like a million years old and has been on a fuck ton of compilations already. It's a great song and they're an awesome band, but dude... clearly they're not gonna do anything on that huge level.

This is a train wreck and it's going to be hilarious. I mean he will definitely make money on it because there are a lot of really stupid people out there, he was right about that, but MySpace's largest audience has always been the 'indie' crowd..and I can't imagine any of those kids really respecting him now. If you get a chance to read the comments on the MySpace records page, fuckin do it..it's hilarious. So many people just blasting him and him getting really defensive about it.

Ugh...ok. There's nothing wrong with selling out...trading in a couple million a year for a couple hundred million a year, but don't pretend its something its not... it's not indie..it's not underground..it's not unknown...it's not groundbreaking. It's as mainstream and safe as it gets.

Maybe we should make a point of comment advertising every day on the Myspace Records myspace page. That way all the serious music fans will find out about their new home on the web altsounds.com. We may aswell use this to our advantage I think.

I have a myspace but it's only because most of my friends live a couple hundred miles away and it's the only site that they will get on

BUT

It's gotten even worse, besides the main point of myspace just being ghey, now people are making the "elite" groups

Pretty much you can only join them if you are an emo.
