Lykke Li is brilliant. All her songs sound refreshingly different and, for me, she is one of the stand out artists of the year. Breaking It Up is the third single of the critically acclaimed début album Youth Novels. It opens with an energizing choir of ecstatic children which is then backed by Lyyke Li's slightly indecipherable vocal. The euphoria of the choir is canceled out by the melancholy of the lyrics about an affair that cannot happen.

The song (like the rest of Youth Novels) is produced by Bjorn Yttling of Peter, Bjorn and John. As an act who are very familiar with catchy hooks and memorable melodies his influences on Lyyke Li are clearly available for all to see. With this being the year of Adele, Laura Marling and Ida Maria there is a high level of competition amongst the new female singer-songwriters. For me Lykke Li stands out from the crowd and given the variety of Youth Novels there's a lot of potential for the future. Breaking It Up is my favourite single from the album due to its' uplifting and enchanting chorus. Not being a fan of buying singles I would recommend anyone to get hold of her album.
