I was a fan of Anti-Flag’s last album, but I wasn’t as impressed with this one. After a few listens it got quite boring. I think there’s only so much whining about the American government that one guy can take! Now I know Anti-Flag are a political band, but I just don’t get why they have to release eight albums of the ‘stop war’ message. It’s not as if anyone’s listening to them. And before two or three songs on this CD they have an annoying broadcast speech, which got on my nerves after the first listen.
The one thing I do like about Anti-Flag is the bass lines. They’re so jazzy and smooth, pretty similar to Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt’s bass lines. ‘Good and Ready’ is a perfect example of this. Being the first track it’s naturally one of the best songs on the album. ‘The Bright Lights of America’, which is the first release off this album, is again a good song, but it’s only these two tracks that are really any good on the whole album IMO. The rest of the songs sound samey.
Having formed in 1988, releasing eight albums and six E.P’s, I don’t think many people are paying much attention to them. It’s time they gave it a rest with their political stance.
While Anti-Flag have been protesting against ‘the system’ they’ve seem to have forgotten about the music. For die-hard Anti-Flag fans this may be the best album they have done, but I think a lot of people will agree with me that they have been playing the same game long enough. Give it a rest boys and next time try and come up with something new, fresh and original!
