‘Paralyzer’ by Finger Eleven is, in some ways, a bit naff. The slick ‘slip’ sound effects that are splattered all over the verses are a bit boyband (you can all too easily imagine some synchronised dance move accompanying that synth.) It’s also too predictable; you can time almost to the second when the music’s about to cut out and give the vocals extra emphasis, and every time a lyric is about to be recycled for the trail-off ending. And those lyrics don’t help matters - “I hold on so nervously to me and my drink/ I wish it was cooling me,” anyone?
But, ‘Paralyzer’ is also a lot of fun, and irritatingly catchy, in a Maroon 5 sort of way. You may not want to like it, but by the time that last, recycled line from the chorus rings out, you probably will.
The reason why ‘Paralyzer’ works against all the odds, is its perfectly-constructed chorus. The drum-roll build up is genius, raising your expectations so that when that bouncy, poppy groove kicks in, it’ll latch onto your unsuspecting brain, and you’ll never be able to shake it off. Each line of the chorus is strategically placed for maximum addictiveness, ensuring every last word acts as a hook that’ll draw you deeper into this irritatingly catchy song.
This CD also includes an album version (with the word “shitty” left in) and a ‘Pulse Mix,’ which has slightly different vocals and a heavier backing track. It’s slightly less of a guilty pleasure, and might just be the version you play to your friends to make them sympathise with how you just can’t get this damned song out of your head.
