OCTOBER SKY - HELL ISN'T MY HOME
UNSIGNED/TRX DISTRIBUTION September 3, 2008, 04:59 AM OCTOBER SKY – HELL ISN’T MY HOME TRX DISTRIBUTION Fresh out of Montreal Quebec, this band has been kicking some serious ass in their home province beating out Madonna’s ‘4 Minutes’ on the Musique Plus Charts debuting at number four with their first single’s video “Hit The Ground”, their second single which is the album’s title track is soon to follow suit, the video for the track is currently in post production. The band is Karl Raymond – Vocals/Guitar, Alex Racine – Drums, Yanik Rouleau – Keys and Andrew Walker on the Bass. October Sky’s debut album is dropping today in stores across Canada only but is available worldwide through their myspace or website. The album is a two disc LP one with ten tracks and the other a bonus disc with three extra tunes. The band wrote, produced and arranged all of the tracks on ‘Hell Isn’t My Home’. The first single ‘Hit The Ground’ starts in with a slow mellow melody and soft singing, it builds up in the chorus the flow smooth. The vocals are a little unsteady it sounded as if he was trying to sing it as best he could in a soft tone, clearly his strength is in the power vocals. “My eyes are blinded by an explosion so bright it, it turned the sky from black to blue. I am deaf; I can’t hear my voice even if I scream for help.” The lyrics a uniquely their own, too bad you have to listen to the track a few times before you understand what he says. Raymond’s enunciation is weak, majority of the tracks on this LP are hard to understand due to the lack of diction, largely due to his Quebeqios accent which is blatantly present. “Sacrifice” is the second track on the record, it is as of now my favorite. Vocals are exquisite minus the diction that is the biggest issue they face, lyrically the tune is a bit selfish because to reach your goals you must sacrifice something and in this track they do not want to do so they want it all without any sacrifice. What world are they living in because here on earth everything comes with a price everyone must pay their dues. Musically the composition is phenomenal the instruments are played with precision. I must say I am vibing their sound it’s not groundbreaking but it’s not making my ears cry that's a good thing. The LP’s title track has these seriously familiar chords, it seems as though it’s the favorite for most bands I have heard those same chords at least seven times in the past month all different bands with different tunes but all use the same chord. The band’s sound is closely reminiscent of My Chemical Romance sloshed in with Radiohead Coldplay. Vocally the track is by far the best although it is whiney at times reminding me of STP frontman Weiland mixed with MCR’s frontman Way. The difference between them and Raymond is the vocal range; Raymond has a vast range unlike the mentioned lead vocalists. “So let me just quit, Hell isn’t my home my soul isn’t condemned burn all you feel.” I am in love with the melody of the tune ‘Black to Blue’ enchanting keys although I’m not feeling the chorus’ vocal arrangements it could have been done differently and much better. Lyrics are uplifting and different than expected, the tune as a whole is decent but the music is what captures the ear tuning out the lyrics. Many of these tracks have a similar base and get a bit redundant at times causing me to lose interest. A few naptastic tunes are ‘The Message’ and ‘The World In Stereo’ they are too slow and don’t have much of a punch except for near the end of ‘The World In Stereo’ it picks up a bit but overall far too nappy for me. I must give out props to the artwork on the album sleeve jacket, it's not incredibly amazing but deserves praise for the layout and placement of the lyrics; an innovated way to introduce the band to the world. The verdict on October Sky’s latest definitely an acquired taste, I can see many people enjoying this record. 09/02/08 – FRIDAE MATTAS www.octobersky.ca www.myspace.com/octoberskyrock ©FRIDAE2008™
