Between The Buried and Me - Colors

Between The Buried And Me changed my perspective on music and were one of the first metal bands that interested me enough to even give it a listen. I put this mainly down to their eclecticism to really delve into metal as a genre and to start truly appreciating its beauty. I am now a huge fan and have since invested my time in many other metal bands. Even though my metal band knowledge is now bulging, I have always found myself going back to “Mordecai “ by Between The Buried And Me and listening to it over and over again – even now; always trying to show it to new people that could get their ears and eyes opened by listening to this band. The same happened for me when their second full length album “Alaska” came out. Since then however, for some reason new Between the Buried and Me material has seemed to pass me by. In fact, "Colors" also passed me by when it was released but luckily through a friend I managed to get my mitts on a copy of it and thank fuck I did!

Colors, is a mere eight songs in length. Judging by this you may come under the impression that this is nothing but a mini album. You would be very wrong with that assumption my friend!! Some of the songs on this album are 10 and 14 minutes long which combined almost can equate to an album in itself! The latter track, single and last track on the album "White Walls" is an impeccable piece of carefully written, performed and crafted music that takes you on one of the best journeys of your life. Every single track on “Colors” is a stand out track in its own right however, this album is better experienced when listened to in completeness as it only takes it true form when fully digested. From the moment you slip this CD in the player you are taken on a journey that embargoes you to places you would never imagine - typical BTBAM quirky key and time signature changes, freaky circus music, beat downs, synths, screaming, melody. It's all present in true Between The Buried And Me fashion. I must say that Colours [to me] is Between the Buried and Me’s best effort to date that truly demonstrates their continuing high end musicianship, tightness as a unit, and maturity within their song writing and performance capabilities.

“Colors” by Between the Buried and Me is my favourite album thus far in 2008. According to Wikipedia however, “Colors” actually came out in 2007!!! And I thought I was with the times LOL!
I would highly recommend this highly influential piece of art to any music fan out there to truly help give you a different perspective on the music that can exist in the world if you only stepped outside the ring of what your told to listen to and opened your ears for a moment.
