This is probably one of the best albums I’ve ever had the pleasure of reviewing. From the first track to the last, We The Kings have really outdone themselves.
The opening track on the album ‘Secret Valentine’ has quite an epic chorus, with a cracking melody built around really nice lyrics. This track is a possible release track in my eyes, without a doubt one of the best songs on the album.
The first release off We The Kings ‘Check Yes Juliet’ is an instant winner. Great melody, great guitar riffs, great harmonies and clapping! I do love a good clapping section in songs. I can see why We The Kings chose to release this as the first single, it’s again one of the best, if not the best song on the album.
Although some people will say that We The Kings sound like a lot of other bands around, notable ones being Boys Like Girls, The Academy is… and a few other American pop-punk bands. I have heard a few people putting We The Kings in the ‘overrated pile’ but these are people who know virtually nothing about music and only know how a BC Rich guitar sounds. I will say though, fans of Boys Like Girls and The Academy is... will really dig this album.
Another great thing about this album is the subtle use of a synthesizer in some songs. By not having a permanent synth player, they don’t fall into the trap of putting too much synth into their songs, which some bands do when they have the luxury of a synthesizer. One notable synth line, which I found to be one of the best additions of synthesizer in a song since The Darkness front man Justin Hawkins played a synth solo on ‘Girlfriend’, is the synth melody in ‘Check Yes Juliet'. I’m not sure if they just hit one key and the arppegiator do all the work for them, and I usually slam bands for using that, but it fits so perfectly, the song wouldn’t be the same without it.
My favourite track on the album is the last track ‘This Is Our Town’, a strange choice to put a slow, yet epic, piano song at the end of the album. Usually on an album like this I’d expect it to go out with a bang! But, although this song is a slow ‘lighters in the air’ song, they once again have an amazing chorus in epic proportions. With the additions of violins as well as the piano, it gives it that different type of bang, which leaves you wanting more. I enjoyed this song so much, I worked it out on piano!
Being one of the best albums I’ve listened to all year, this album is well worth your time. I would definitely advise you to buy it.
