At first glance, it's easy to hate a band like Nochaa....the generic death metal artwork that brandishes their CD covers and their track names ('Upon My Last Dying Breath', 'A Cry For Bloodshed' and the Iron Maiden-esque 'Into The Crypt' to name but a few) do nothing to help them to stand out from all of the other black metal bands that seem to be emerging from the younger generations in the thriving big mountainous mosh pit that is the South Wales music scene.
And then you listen to their music which unfortunately also lacks real originality, and this is a massive shame because Nochaa are a very talented band who seem to have songwriting down to a tee. The constant clicking of the double kicks that sound almost like the world fastest typist, the undeniably rock and roll riffs and the overall blood hungry feel of their sound keeps the music consistently exciting. When they take a Kit Kat break and ease off the acceleration for a moment (most notably in title track 'Tortured To Death' and 'The Rising Tides of Failure'), Nochaa really come into their own. The new found sparsity of the arrangement allows room for creativity, and they do it just right. The simplicity of the snare as it resounds and the focus on rhythms is a very welcome break from the otherwise fast paced full on assault of the ears. Not that I'm against this type of music, because I'm not, but this can often get too much as for some reason, younger bands seem to think that superior brutality is more important than good, solid memorable songwriting. Wrong. There is still room for this, and indeed a need for it, but a little diversity within a genre's boundaries never did any harm.
I would really genuinely like for Nochaa to do well, because of all of the bands in their area doing a similar sort of thing, they are by far the best. However, the band is still relatively new and fresh compared to many others, so it is not too late for them to step back and reassess things that would make them even more unique and therefore attractive to both labels and fans. Nochaa, if you are reading this, surprise me with your next batch of work. it is so easy to copy bands, but to draw influence from them and to do your own thing is something a lot more credible. Oh, and please drop the pig squeals. They make your bum look big.
