“Losing Sun” is a band from Cardiff, who can best be compared to the 90’s Nu-Metal movement musically but vocally it is hard to compare them to anyone. On first listen I found myself thinking maybe this band can cause a stir in the local music scene.

“Memory Run” is a well impressive opener for the album. It storms in with a moody, guitar fueled, drum pounding intro. Just from the intro it is easy to tell that this band has lots of live experience. Everything about Losing Sun’s sound just fits together: the guitar sound, the melodic yet shouty vocals, and the frequent use of double bass drum. The chorus to the opener isn’t really nice to the ear but it does have a melody and is memorable.

Nearly every song on the album begins with some synthesized sound. This does get tedious and it is lazy in my opinion. However, coincidence or not, the best song on the album “Classic Art Betrayal” starts with guitar. It contains a lot of the same elements as “Memory Run” but it is more down tempo and possibly even more moody than the opener.

While listening through this album, the vocals become predictable and a lot of vocal lines can sound incredibly similar to any that came beforehand. Songs start to drag and it becomes easy to lose concentration on actually listening to the album. The song “Analogous” breaks the “Perspective” up, as it is just a 1-minute guitar repetition with eerie sounds over the top. But that track alone does not rescue this album from being, for want of a better word, boring.

If there is a next album, “Losing Sun” could do lots of things to try and give it a different feel to “Perspective”. Perhaps record at a different studio, go to a country house away from distraction to prepare for the album, etc. Whatever they do, all they really need to do is concentrating on writing interesting songs that don’t all sound the same.
