To keep it short and simple and to start off traditionally very British chips-and-mince-pie-with-gravy-and-bread-and-butter-and-maybe-a-pint-of-ale-that-looks-like-shit straight up honest negative viewpoint, Arkells lack originality and are nothing exciting.
If you're in a rush to do nothing or to combat the credit crunch single handedly by shopping in Lidl and turning lights off like it's the blitz [like everybody is], you are excused from reading on. In a rather controversial (perhaps revolutionary?) boat-rocking way I have defied unwritten laws of music journalism and have began with a summary. I'm like a Che Guevara with words without the need for the camp moustache.
If you're reading this, congratulations on being patient. The world needs more people like you.
Anyway...
As I stated, this 'Digital Sampler' from US act Arkells lacks serious originality. HOWEVER so does the majority of popular music today, so that's not a big problem (is it?). I don't imagine that the band claim to be starting something new, so hats off to them for making good old likeable Americana-Dad-Music-Rock.
Emerging at an arguably good time for a band such as this due to Kings Of Leon's world domination, it's hard to imagine the band not doing well in terms of tours and radio play. Easygoing 'No Champagne Socialist' is a pleasant listen and sounds like something from an advert for a health spa, which is a good thing, because that too makes money. On the other hand however, 'Oh, The Boss Is Coming' shows that Arkells have a more upbeat, rock and roll side, and is sure to be a crowd pleaser when performed live.
It can be difficult and often unfair to base an opinion of a band on just tracks, but these two prove that this is a band that is diverse within reason, tight, and able to come up with the goods for their target market. Nothing extraordinary but possibly a good cash-cow should they choose to settle for that route.
