If you haven't heard of Those Dancing Days yet, then you most likely haven't tuned into MTV2 or The NME Channel recently. Televised adverts for their debut album, 'In Our Space Hero Suits', released this week have been HEAVILY on rotation on these channels. A good thing, I think, as it's very hard to imagine somebody not liking this band so giving out as much access to them as possible is the best step forward, in this instance definately.
'Home Sweet Home' is the fourth UK single release from swedish dolly popgroup, Those Dancing Days. The bands' name is taken from the Led Zeppelin song (which they covered as their first single release) 'Dancing Days' and sums up their musical style perfectly. A mixture of northern soul with some elements of riot grrrl, packaged in a cutesy quirky female five piece, Those Dancing Days are no doubt going to be big. With a formula like this, how could they not be?
The song starts of slowly, with psychedielic guitar strumming and then whimsical keyboards, reminiscent of something similar to The Doors in the 70's. Then the tempo speeds up and you'll be forgiven for wondering whether this was "Fell in love with a girl" by The White Stripes. Not for long. As soon as starlet in the making front girl Linnea Jonsson starts crooning, you'll be compelled to start bopping and singing your heart out, whether you know the words or not.
Luckily the words aren't that hard to learn, or read into for that matter. Let's get this straight, with a band who's leading lady is only 18, how much insight are you expecting? "I found a pair of broken glasses and now I can see clearly", the lyrics are not what make this band, but nor is that what they intend. It's the bubblegum beats and warm slice of life apple pie choruses, sung with one intention only; to get you moving and those shoulders shufflng.
I adore the production of their music, and no less this single. True to their northerm soul routes it gives one the rustic impression of vinyl found in your parents attic from 30 years ago, of an era long gone, but still sounding exciting and fresh.
A good follow up to the infectious 'Hitten' (Swedish for 'The Hit'), 'Home Sweet Home' has everything and more to bring Those Dancing Days to the masses, a cracking video which is a joy to watch with the colourful postcards of their home sentiments and traveling high jinks, the song is incredibly catchy and you'll be singing the chorus for hours after hearing it. They could almost be described as The Sugarbabes, but cool, with good influences, quirky style and less moody faces. A good thing for pop - right?
