Well first things first this evening is already going to be a dissappointment for me, i walk in through the metal detector 'beep, beep' all is good, i don't need to be inappropriatly touched all is good, so i walk on through get to the ticket girl she smiles takes my ticket all is good, i head up the stairs and notice a poster on the wall that reads 'Late Of The Pier will not be playing due to injury' and instantly i cannot get to the bar quick enough all is not good. Hugely unhappy not to be seeing this band it would appear there has been a leg break (get well soon).
So the first act are bumped up to second on the bill and as a replacement we get Dundee band Alto Elite who at short notice appear to have snuck in a mini-fanclub of sorts, their songs are kinda catchy and all but for me it's the awe inspiring sight of Art Garfunkel on drums how they pulled that coup off i've got no idea?!?!
Leeds locals The Hair are promoted up the league table and they provide a solid set as support bashing their way through 'Blood', 'Half Cut', and my new favourite song 'Disco Retro' with it's chorus of 'i never liked disco/i never lied/i never got retro' lovin' it. Though slightly let down by the lack of 60's folk stars in this band they get the crowd suitably warmed-up though to be honest my wearing of a scarf has left me bloody roasting anyway (surprise it's cold and wet up here).
And so to the Kaiser Chiefs now i recently posted an album review for thier new effort 'Off With Their Heads' and i was less than nicey nicey about it so i was prepared for the dissapointment of seeing loads of mediocre new songs trotted out tonight and well even though the album isn't out till monday i think the rest of the crowd tonight were in agreement with me; Ricky Wilson 'we're gonna play some news songs for you', Crowd 'Booooooooooooo!'.
Anyhow they start off with two new songs that are the decent efforts off the newbie, we get the mariachi of 'Spanish Metal' and then single 'Never Miss A Beat' which is an improvement live than on record as you can scream your way past some of the appalling lyrics. Crowd please 'Everyday I Love You Less And Less' is then wheeled out to excessive bouncing before we get 'Heat Dies Down' and 'Modern Way'.
More new songs with 'You Want History' which fails to incite the crowd in any way and then 'I Like It Too Much' which i like but again the rest of the crowd are muted in silence and so the band go back to what we know and love by throwing 'Ruby' in our faces. All that was undone with 'Good Dyas Bad Days' which the band say is their favourite new song but to be honest it's a let down when all the crowd want are the songs to jump around to.
We do get to have Ricky Wilson part the crowd like some sort of chav Moses and run to the back of the room followed by a crowd surf back to the front, i have to admit that i did split-second fondle Mr. Wilson it was unintentional and if he feels violated in any way then i do apologise. Back to the music and a rapturous 'The Angry Mob' gets the crowd back on the bands side which is where they stay till the end as we get the trio of 'Oh My God', 'Everything Is Average Nowadays', and a final 'I Predict A Riot' which it would appear it did! I was on my way to the exit when allegedly a riot did indeed break out oh those crazy Scottish crowds any excuse will do!
The Kaiser Chiefs certainly will leave here tonight knowing that the new songs are going to take some work to get the crowds interested in them as tonight they pretty much all fell flat on there face but if they can write some more of those older tunes (by older i mean about 3 years ago!) then they will continue to incite riots in crowds well at least in Glasgow.
And to get over my sadness of missing Late Of The Pier i got disgracefully drunk as is my want to do so.
