Greeley Estates are back with their 3rd full length album of metal/screamo/hardcore fusion; Go West Young Man, Let the Evil Go East.

Before checking out their music I took a quick look at the CD sleeve, and immediately noticed how uncannily they resemble From First to Last. After listening to the album I was disappointed to not be proven wrong… they don’t sound exactly like From First to Last but it seems like they’ve drawn quite a bit of inspiration from them. Not necessarily a bad thing but sadly demonstrates how bands are finding it hard to come up with a new sound these days.

First track ‘Blue Morning’ hits you hard with an onslaught of screamo vocals and heavy guitars to let you know exactly what this band is all about. It’s this track especially which reminds me of From First to Last, with high dissonant guitar parts, a similar distorted screaming vocal and punky rhythms, which also hints at old Norma Jean.

However this album isn’t without its more memorable tracks, with songs such as ‘If I Could Be Frank, You’re Ugly’ providing the big anthemic choruses and ‘Mother Nature is a Terrorist’ which has an interesting dirty synth sound at the beginning. In fact much of this album is decorated with refreshing synth and electronic sounds which really help set them apart from other bands. ‘Desperate Times Call for Desperate Housewives’ is another great song featuring a brutal beat-down complete with 808 three quarters of the way through which can’t help but get your head nodding.

Unfortunately lyric-wise this album is nothing to shout about and towards the end of the CD all the songs begin to sound the same. All-in-all this album may not be anything different but there’s definitely room for progression and I think this band have it in them to try for something new!
