So, this is not the first time I've seen this band live I must admit, but the fact I can repeat see and see them (what's the running order so far this year? Almost ten times no doubt) must speak volumes. I really do enjoy going to a Kids in Glass Houses gig, and this time was no exception.
We arrived at the Astoria (fast becoming my second home and probably my favourite small London venue, if not then definitely in the top 3) literally just in time for their set to start, obviously getting all the important parts out of the way first such as getting drinks and final trip to the toilets to back comb our hair, haha. The band came on stage to rapturous applause, and started straight away with "Good boys gone rad", making a change to their usual set opener "Fisticuffs" from most (I can only confirm London) gigs this year. Some kind gentleman had let me have his place right in front by the balcony as I'm short and he can clearly see over me, and it transpired that he was the proud parent of drummer Phil, so we had a natter and learnt all about how Phil first asked for a drum kit aged 7, finally got it aged 8 after continuous asking for a year, and the rest, as they say, is history. Really lovely man, and you can see where Phil gets his sweet manners from (I have one horrendous flashback of where I had my hands in Phils' hoody pockets at a festival as I was sooo coooold, and he kindly indulged me for a while out of pure politeness, sweet guy). Moving into "Girls" the excitable crowd enthusiastically sang along to the chorus "those dirty girl, girl, are gonna have their wicked way", with me and my friend as no exception (despite getting looks from everyone else on the press balcony for dancing and looking like fans when we're meant to look moody and too cool, like what-ev). Next came "Dance all night", which again is impossible not to sing along to, and the band really do sound brilliant on stage, pretty much like they do every time. You can really tell the caliber of a band when their music sounds just as good live if not better than it does recorded. Kids is definitely one of those bands, and with a lot of these pop punk/powerpop bands it's their performance live where you really see all their flaws; weak out of tune vocals (not mentioning any names youmeatsix) and sloppy music. But with Kids Aleds' vocals are spot on through the entirety of the set. Next up was "Lovely bones", a slightly down tempo song compared to the previous ones, which got the crowd swaying their hands in the air from side to side. Followed by the explosive "Saturday" then current single "Fisticuffs", which again got the audience clapping in time to the drum beat and shouting along "Don't tell me I don't know what it's like to be alone!". Moving up a notch heavier they then sang "Raise hell", which with the chorus line was probably quite apt for this young impressionable crowd, "as you glance around the room to check that no one sees how normal you are", and I'm sure they felt great solidarity when they sang whole hearted along to it, then came an oldie, the shouty "Telenovella".
With a brief introduction with how the next song isn't cool because it's a current cover, but the band aren't cool, so hey, they did an AMAZING rendition of Kings of Leon "Sex on Fire". A definite high light for me, and maybe because I haven't seen the KOL version live yet I actually thought theirs was better (blasphemy for some, I know!)!
The set followed on with "Shameless", once again introduced slating some poor girl who the song was written about (I don't really approve of things like that), then "Pillowtalk" (probably one of my least favourite songs), "Church tongue", which thankfully ended all the slow down tempo ones as I much prefer the upbeat stuff, though despite my personal preferences I was still singing and dancing along and having a great time. "Easy Tiger" got the crowd going literally mad, especially at the break down with the "doo do do doo do do do", then "Historia" came and went, leading to the final song of the eve, and no doubt their biggest hit yet, "Give me what I want", which as you'd expect the crowd lapped up, closing an brilliantly fun set, full with tumbling helium balloons from the sky, aaaaahhhhhh!.
Once again a sterling performance from Kids in Glass Houses. I've never been disappointed at a show yet.
