Everything Everything - Suffragette Suffragette [Single]

Salvia/XL

Patience is a virtue, one which I don’t possess a great deal of, but boy have I had to be patient to get excited about a Manchester band again. ‘Suffragette Suffragettes' is the debut single from much-hyped Everything Everything. Despite this track being their most accessible, it seems the hype is more hope that they will go on to become a great band, rather than a great success chart-wise. At times, they sound a little like a dream collaboration between Battles and Animal Collective (‘Crisis Over’ even more so and B-side ‘Luddites and Lambs’ sounds like an equally fantastic collaboration between Animal Collective and TV on the Radio, proving Everything Everything know who to be influenced by if nothing else), and, much like those bands, they will be an acquired taste for sure. Where there will be joy, there will also be much division.

After the ‘Battle Collective’ verse and chorus with their muted notes and pinch harmonics, they suddenly break out into a riff-tastic attempt to get on the next Guitar Hero game, bridging its way back to the verse and intriguinng chorus with lyrics that at first sounds a little worryingly like “Who’s gonna sit on your face when I’m gone?”. I hope to God I am right in thinking it is actually “fence”, and not “face”, although musically Everything Everything are far from fence-sitters. It’s a big risk to sound like they do in this city, where Gallagher/Brown clones still expect their ‘meat and two veg indie music’ rather than such ‘musical Marmite’, but this simply makes them sound all the more refreshing. This city NEEDS more bands like Everything Everything (hell, the whole world does). I’d even go as far as to say they have the most original sound to come from Manchester since…..well, ever.

I should also add that in all my days I never expected to hear a song to name-drop ‘Pedigree Chum’. It appears that Everything Everything will sing about pretty much everything and anything, and this is just one of many reasons why ‘Suffragette Suffragette’ gets my vote as one of the best tracks of the year so far.
