I have never heard of, or indeed heard them before, but I now hate The Bigger Lights .
They bring the world whiny, stereotypically Cali-sounding music, embrace all of the clichés on route, have the American 'alternative' poster boy image, seriously lack originality and I fucking love them. This is why I hate them. Stay with me, please.
This is a genre of music that by taste more than rule, I generally don't like. Panic At The Disco made a highly respectable and creative first record which I loved, but that's about it for me I'm afraid. Too old and pretentious to fall into the likes of Paramore and Fall Out Boy's target markets, I have never really wanted to, or needed to embrace this teeny bopper pop punk scene that is going on here these days. This is nothing to do with acting cool - I just genuinely don't like it. Don't hate it, but certainly don't love it - there is nothing new of interest for me here. Until The Bigger Lights came along that is - the bastards.
Again though, The Bigger Lights really don't offer anything different to the hundreds of other similar bands doing this sort of thing but that is their forte - because The Bigger Lights do it better and hit the nail of pop punk right on the head. To be able to make somebody like myself want to turn it up and reluctantly play a little bit of impromptu air drums is definitely a talent because I am probably a tough cookie to crack when it comes to new music.
Short and sweet tracks like 'Closer (Time Stops Breathing)' and the grammatically urgently titled 'Apocalypse!' pretty much sum up what The Bigger Lights do best, whereas 'Goldmine Valentine' demonstrates the small amount of diversity that this release offers. This isn't a problem however, because 'Fiction Fever' is short enough to stop the polished pop punk whiny-ness becoming a problem.
I do actually hate myself for saying this, but what an awesome release - The Bigger Lights' 'Fiction Fever' is one of the best new releases that I have heard in ages.
Right then, I guess this means that I have to face defeat, so I'm off to Blue Banana for a whole new wardrobe.......
