The fourth UK release taken from their debut album, "This is Alphabeat", "What is happening" is a not bad effort from Danish popstrels Alphabeat. Having initially despised Alphabeat from the moment I laid eyes on them (literally, laid eyes on, in the form of their annoying blue peter-esque videos) I have gradually changed my mind and came round to some kind of luke warm feelings for them. While I can't ever imagine myself rushing out to get my hands on their latest release or album, I've decided they don't deserve my full on hate, which is a start.
"What is happening" is a typical Alphabeat song, annoyingly catchy in the way only really cheesy bands can be (think Zutons and Fratellis). Though not as fast paced and upbeat as their usual releases, it is still pure pop, and though I can't imagine anybody loving this song, a lot of the general public populist indie/pop lot will no doubt like it.
There are a few pros to this song; it's a massive grower, sounding (thankfully) slightly less High School Musical and a tiny bit more mature compared to their other releases, and it is a good all round composed and produced piece. But really the only thing that saves this song from getting a very low mark from me would be the last minute, where the song changes pace and dare I say it, rocks out a little bit. Singer Anders voice actually resembling something interesting brings the whole thing to a close and leaves you with a feeling that it actually wasn’t that bad, considering, maybe not even close to bad. Though not as memorable as “10,000 nights”, the video is certainly far less annoying which is a big plus in my eyes, and, like I said, the rocking out bit is good, promising almost.
I would like to see more stuff like the last minute of this song from Alphabeat please.
i know what you mean about them growing on you - i discarded them as pointless pop when i first heard them but its funny how im starting to appreciate them now. definitely going up in my opinion with every new release tho - this one's better than that fascination song, urrrghghghghgh
Haha, yes, Fascination was pretty bad.. I just don't understand how a band can aspire to be so poppy and soul less, it's a very strange concept for me, which is why this one was slightly better in my eyes.
