Now I for the life of me can't fathom why New Rhodes aren't more popular in this country, they write wonderfully catchy 80's-lite pop songs such as the superb 'I Wish I Was You' and 'You've Given Me Something That I Can't Give Back' and yet still no NME cover shoot or drooling all over them (maybe not such a bad thing). However, they have a nice little niche in Japan and thankfully that means we get a second album called 'Everybody Loves A Scene' which hits these shores on 2nd of February but for now the lead single of the same name.
'Everybody Loves A Scene' starts like it belongs in a John Hughes movie (remember him?), and has all the New Rhodes hallmarks of the steady groove that builds into a sweeping chorus that has vocalist James Williams unleashing his very distinctive tones - "i know what's at stake but/i've seen everything/and it's all i've ever needed" - it's incredibly catchy and demands repeat listens. And of course the title has instant conotations with our pandering to the latest crazy that appears for at least five minutes, i'm sure a lot of you know exactly what i'm talking about and no doubt fall into that category, I myself have been found guilty at times.
Nobody really wants us to go back to the days of disatrous 80's music and fashion especially, but if we are all going to get mullets again then i'd be happy to do it to the soundtrack of New Rhodes. Now John Hughes if your reading; and damnit you better be, go out and make a movie and get these guys on the soundtrack - your clearly doing nothing anyway.
