The new single 'No Sunlight' from 'Death Cab for Cutie', is off their 7th full-length album 'Narrow Stairs'. It's a decent single, from a band whose music spans so many genres it's hard to classify them. This track however, is definitely indie, and that is how Death Cab for Cutie refer to themselves on their Myspace.
The first Death Cab for Cutie song that I ever heard was from their second album, 'We have the facts and we're voting yes' and the music back then was completely different than it is now. It's quite difficult to fully understand Death Cab for Cutie's music and only their die-hard fans get the depth of the band. This doesn't, however, mean that no-one else likes them though, because there are LOADS of people that do.
'No Sunlight' is quite a refreshing track despite the dark title, both metaphorically and literally. It's a little annoying at first, as is most indie music, but once you've listened to it a few times you realise that it's quite pleasant to listen to as background music. It's also easy to sing-along to as the lyrics are quite simple and the phrases 'Of Sunlight, In Sunlight and No Sunlight' are repeated maybe a little too much.
As for the rest of instruments, there is nothing too special or imaginative to specifically comment on, except that it is your average Joe when it comes to Indie music. Simple drum beats, with the odd tom-roll or two and basic chords on the guitar throughout most of the track. The Bass-line is repeated almost constantly without much change at all. The lead-guitar and piano do juxtapose quite well in places with some catchy little riffs, but again it's not anything particularly outstanding.
Overall, the single is worth a listen, but I would recommend listening to it on the radio or on Death Cab for Cutie's website before buying it. It is a track that some people, who don't like, or don't know Death Cab for Cutie may like as a one-off track.
