Diminished Fifth Records
Nine Mile Woods is the second album from the southern sludge metal band, Gallactus. Combining their various influences, such as Sabbath, Clutch, Entombed and the very obvious Motorhead, Gallactus create this grinding sludgy southern rock sound that will have you banging your head and gurning like an old lady who just had her seat stolen on the bus. The mixture of genres is somewhere between metal/southern rock/stoner and blues, which they have labelled ‘Cosmic Bong Rock’.
Gallactus create their filthy tone by drenching their bass in a bath of filthy fuzzy goodness. The stand out track for me is ‘Locust Noose’ as it just sits right in the pocket from start to finish and as soon as the opening riff starts you know its going to kick. Nine Mile Woods is full of great tracks and the aptly named ‘Kilminster’ confirms the great influence that Motorhead have had on Gallactus and their sound. Some of the songs do tend to stick to one riff for the bulk of the track and have little variation in them but then again I’m pretty sure that’s the point.
So if stoner rock is your thing then you should check out Nine Mile Woods. If your one of these people that hates to part with their hard earned cash then they even accommodate your needs, by posting one of their early releases for free download, available via their myspace. Great album to sit back and mong out to.
