Altsounds - Tony Christie - Made In Sheffield [Album]

When you hear the name Tony Christie you immediately fill yourself with thoughts of the song “Amarillo”, only you realize what you're thinking of is Peter Kay, and not the real man behind it all.

Tony Christie's new album, “Made in Sheffield” is frankly something you might buy for your grandparents. Reviving many songs from famous Sheffield artists such as The Human League, Pulp, and an unknown talent in Martin Bragger, Tony Christie still has a voice that is strong enough to please his fans.

Made in Sheffield kicks off with a lovely instrumental on the song “Only one who knows”, where you have visions of Frank Sinatra or Matt Monroe. Lyrically any fans of the Artic Monkeys or The last Shadow Puppets, would soon realize it’s the work of Alex Turner. Tony Christie's mature voice makes the song very moving, which definitely brings the song to life. “Perfect Moon” and “Born to Cry” are average songs but Tony Christie’s powerful voice makes them both very uplifting to listen to.

“All I ever care about is you” written by Tony Christie is a song which you would see your grandparents swaying to at there local social club, with a soft drum beat, piano, sweet and loving lyrics it really makes the song an enjoyable listen. Then all of a sudden out of nowhere you think your listening to Johnny Cash, with a catchy track called “Going home tomorrow”. The Human League’s beautiful song “Louise”, is done pure justice with yet another moving performance from Tony Christie’s heart warming voice. “Danger is a woman in love” is a very feisty track compared to “I‘ll never let you down” and “How can I entertain you” which again both suit Tony Christie’s voice so well you would think they were purposely written for him. The lullaby styled song “Paradise Square” is absolutely beautiful, filling you with wonderment. Richard Hawley’s “Coles Corner” reminds you of the classic “What kind of fool am I” by Anthony Newly, with its yet again powerful lyrics, and strong singing from Tony Christie.

I was pleasantly surprised by Tony Christie’s voice and song choices. Tony Christie is undoubtedly still a Classic talent that has revived many songs, old and recent to a standard that is suitable for any relaxing Sunday afternoon. Although I don’t think we will be seeing Peter Kay making a charity single from any of these, I’m glad. Tony Christie “Made in Sheffield” is a very well crafted album, and should never be made fun of.
