Les Gars - La Physique [EP]

It’s a shame that the Les Gars EP starts of with the song it does. Track one, ‘Cut it out’, is a sleaze rock snarly middle of the road number that misleadingly worries you into thinking the remainder of the five track EP will consist of the same stuff. But, as I said, that would be a misleading assumption.

I almost 100% like the songs in the reverse order they were put on the EP, track five being my number one (or number two, track four is pretty damn good too), and track one being my least favourite. What Les Gars offers in their best tracks are grunge filled guitars and perfectly drawn out vocals that draw connotations with a certain Mr. Cobain, so much so that I woke up with the song, "Nice way to see things" (track three), persistently running through my head making me ardently wonder where the hell that song was from? It has to be a Nirvana one but I couldn't place which album it came from. And then it dawned on me; it was from the Les Gars EP I listened to last night.

The absolute stand out tracks on this EP are track four and five, my personal choice being track four ('She sleeps'). Despite it's slightly Kooks-esque guitars, 'She sleeps' is a beautiful lullaby that drifts hauntingly above your consciousness with it's perfectly under produced lo-fi sound, that could almost (almost!) come from pre-grunge pioneers Sebadoh or Dinosaur Jr.

'Rat Race Mob', the final track from the EP, is a big player largely for the much needed scream factor in the vocals. You need the song to peak at certain areas with a croaky strained scream and this song delivers perfectly. Very grungy and even more Kurt sounding then the others, I can imagine it being amazing live.

The five track EP from Les Gars is very short, and some of the lyrics are a languorously cliched and could be worked on further. I'm not entirely sure if the Kurt comparisons will work in its favour (it does for me), but ultimately I thought it was a great little EP. Admittedly, a couple of tracks we could have done without in my opinion, however this EP (and band) radiates great potential. The only thing that worries me about the future productions from Les Gars is that right now, with the EP as it stands, I think the production so far is almost perfect. It could be tweaked a little here and there but I love the general sound and theme to it. However, me thinks this lo-fi production is most likely due to their circumstance rather than intention, and if and when the songs are re-recorded or produced I genuinely feel it could lose a lot its value and appeal if they're not careful.

That said, their debut EP, 'La Physique', as it stands is very promising and I can't wait to hear more from "the guys" (Les Gars), and am now really looking forward to checking these fellas out live this week and throwing a few questions at 'em.

Thanks for editing, Chris! I came back to check it as I knew it needed a little tweaking and seen you've done it for me - awesome. It's much better, thanks.
