The Brute Chorus - She Was Always Cool [Single]

Unsigned

'Oh dear, Oh dear, Oh dear' is the first thing that came to my head when I listened to The Brute Chorus' new single 'She Was Always Cool'. It is The Brute Chorus' third single that is due for release on December 15th 2008 - and according to their Myspace page it is an attempt at a Christmas number one. I hope they're joking! I will eat my hat if it makes it in the top 40 at Christmas let alone number one.

The Brute Chorus sound similar to a rubbish attempt at copying The Arctic Monkeys with a bit of folk music thrown in. That may be the most annoying thing, The Brute Chorus try to combine cheesy, generic Indie with gentle British Folk and... well... they fail miserably. The Brute Chorus were unsuccessful in getting the combination right and so 'She Was Always Cool' ebbs and flows between the two very different genres.

'She Was Always Cool' also has a B-side entitled 'Artemissia' and this is one of those occasions where the B-side is actually better than the single. Having said that, it doesn't mean 'Artemissia' is brilliant, because it's not. The Brute Chorus have attempted to create a calmer, acoustic track and it works better because they stick to Folk, without any Indie thrown in. The bass-line for this track reminds me very much of a Damien Rice style bass-line, and this is one compliment I have of the single.

The other good thing to say about 'She Was Always Cool' is that the lyrics are actually well written and there are a few catchy lines, which may just get a few people to like this song.

I feel that you have to like an extremely specific kind of music to have any chance of liking 'She Was Always Cool' at all, and if you are into weird, unusual music that nobody else seems to like then give The Brute Chorus a listen. If you're not then get back to staring into space, it will be more entertaining.
