A girl 4 piece that can actually play their instruments? Never you say? Well listen and listen well. The Sheffield based punk rock band, Maeven, rock out harder than a Motorhead fan with tourettes. The girls have the aesthetics as well as the talent, making them a great musical package. Having toured through the Us back in 2006 with great results, they have obviously gathered some good experience before jumping in the never ending minefield of studio time. The record is produced by themselves and Matt Elliss, but does have a few tell tail signs of a DIY job. Digital distortion for one and some dodgy noise-gating on the drums. This is kind of a shame, as the material is very good. Potentially the record could sound stupidly good, but for a debut they have done a spot-on job.

With punky hard bass lines and heavy guitar work, the album gets off to a thumping start with 'Queen Of Hearts', an energetic rock'n'roll track. This is the sort of track you can drive to. It's fast with some good build-ups and creative backing vocals. Tracks that follow are similar in energy and fast-going. The vocals do sometimes sound a little out of place at points, but it's unique, a quality that is very hard to come by in todays Arctic Monkey's ridded society. Solo's take up a large proportion of the album that work very well with this hard trebly bass guitar sound. The choruses are catchy, tapping your foot is an inevitability whilst listening and eventually you may start singing along. The guitar riff for Track 5 - Take To The Skies, sounds reminiscent of Green Day's - American Idiot. This may be a clue into their influences as musicians, personally this band seem alot more creative and diverse than the pop band Green Day (and yes they are Pop). As a musician you listen to a track differently, if your a guitarist you mainly listen to guitar, same goes for drums, keyboard etc. As a drummer myself, the drum beats throughout the album get a little tiring, as their isn't much change from the same pattern and not many fills. Like I said though, thats a criticism as a musician, not a Joe Blogg's listener. The same can be said for structure of the songs, but hey, this is punk/rock'n'roll. They will stick to a formula that works, and it does work for this young talented girl four piece.

Alot of hard work has gone into this record, and it has paid off. The tracks flow well intertwined into rock'n'roll at its hardest and punkiest. This genre will never die, and with this girl four piece punk-rock outfit helping it along the way, i'm sure we will hear more from it. It will be interesting to see Maeven in a live venue, this shows the raw talent at its purest form. Punk should be delivered this way and there is only so much that can be achieved on a record.

Maeven rock, although I'm still not sure how to pronounce their name?

They are ok. I know this is going to sound a little sexest especially coming from a female, but I don't think that all girl 'rock' bands are ever that good.
