What a name for a band, one of the best I have heard. Anyone not having heard of the band would assume Eagles Of Death Metal are actually a Death Metal band, but that’s far from correct. Jesse Hughes and Joshua Homme have something special here. They are just out to have a laugh, and what better way to achieve this but to create garage rock at its most unique through the majesty of song. The whole album has a southern rock vibe, with lashings of cowboy boots and spurs. At moments Queens Of The Stone Age pop into the track but then are violently tucked away with some cool funk influences. Comparing EODM to another band is very hard, they are original in their own right, influences are hard to spot and it’s difficult to tie them down to a conventional genre. This is the third instalment to their album collection, and it’s a great investment. Dance-ability and blues take up a hefty section of the album, with clever production that sounds slightly vintage. The tracks sound layed back, fresh and original.
‘Anything ‘Cept the Truth’ gets the ball rolling with rock’n’roll blues, heavily focusing on a QOTSA style of song writing. ‘Wannabe in L.A’ has latino/mexicana written all over it. With a catchy funky chorus packed away into 2mins 16seconds. ‘High Voltage’ sounds a little like a Nine Inch Nails tune with a citrus twist, the bass line is defiantly high voltage with the ability to rumble your headphones and create an awesome atmosphere. The drums are jittery, the guitar jams out in the back, it all works very well. Other tracks come across as Buck Cherry on acid, as if your driving on route 666 with a dead hooker in your boot (not a personal experience of mine). The album could well suit a film, maybe a Tarrantino flick? ‘Heart On’ has a summery vibe, the guitar follows the vocal line that is very effective and still provides the vocal harmony of QOTSA. The vocals vary through the album, tracks like ‘Cheap Thrills’ sound as if Honne is in the bathroom singing along at his own free will. The band could probably be described as a joke band, but they are just too good to not take seriously in a non-serious way. The duration of each track isn’t huge problem, but it’s very noticeable with one track only jut reaching 5 mins the album just seems to play through very quickly. Short and sweet is always good though. The drum patterns for ‘I’m your Torpedo’ are brilliant, reminiscent of Dave Grohl’s outstanding performance on some of the QOTSA older material. The guitars for the track sound very similar to Metronomy’s debut album ‘Night Out’, and clangy, twingy-twangy sound.
