Somewhat unprofessionally I decided I was going to write Les Gars a bad review solely for me having to wait in the freezing cold for an hour for the band to arrive with the guest-list. Just when I really had enough and was about to call it a night, the magical list arrived and me and my red nose were ushered in, hooray! Deciding the best plan of action to keep myself warm was to neck a few drinks. I then made my way through the pesky Club NME kids and towards the less meat market end of the balcony and waited for the band to come on stage. R olling out on stage Les Gars looked every inch the grunge rock stars, opening with the fantastic “Rat race mob”. Despite the young mainstream crowd clearly not knowing who this three piece was, the majority were clearly mesmerised, including myself. Main vocalist and guitarist Vello Verder delivered every key perfectly, and it was obvious that despite the bands limited experience and time together they were a tight, well oiled machine working together as one to create the intense energy and freshness they were projecting. Compared to what one can only imagine this crowd usually go to see in a band, none of them appeared to have ever seen anything like this. For them the grunge “come back” just meant checked shirts, they didn’t realise there was an actual music movement of pure burning frustration behind it. Next song up was “Cut it Out” which was possibly the most accessible song of their set but was my least favourite on the EP. Despite not initially liking the song as part of the EP, they performed it amazingly well live and it was starting to become clear that Les Gars were a band you saw live, as their recorded music, although very good, was just nothing in comparison to what they could offer. Storming through songs with minimal chat in between, other tracks from the La Physique EP were "Haircut and a Gun" and "Nice Way to See Things" with the remainder of tracks being virtual unknowns to me. However, due to how dynamic the band were on stage, it really didn’t matter as practically every song was delivered with the same energy and excitement as the last.
I wouldn’t be able to give a stand out track as I really thought the whole set was great, and you could tell this by the warm reception being received from the crowd. Of course, there were a few Courteeners/Pigeon Detective type fans who came over (why always to me??) and demanded who this ‘shit’ band were, but to be honest I looked ‘em up and down and wasn’t that surprised to see that kinda sentiment escape their mouths, they’ll probably go back to R n’ B next month. Throwing their CD’s out like Frisbees, the band said goodnight and left the stage, and I knew they were a band that I would definitely be keeping my eye on in future and despite my vowing to say I was going to write Les Gars a bad review for having the audacity to keep me waiting in the cold (haha), I realized I just couldn’t do it. It would be an injustice to such an exciting new live band like Les Gars.
I urge you to go see them live! Until you do, you don’t know what you’re missing.
