Battle For Prague are 4 guys from Birmingham (Greg Cox, Tom Whitfield, Greg Milner, Lottie) who have just released their EP ‘We Could Be Anywhere’. A four track EP which will leave you pining for more! Battle For Prague deserve to go absolutely everywhere. They’re a band that you heart clings to. You can’t help but love their music, it sends you to such a warm and happy place that you just can’t live without. Think of them like the safest, warmest, happiest place you were when you were young. You know, that place where you wanted for nothing, where you were the happiest person alive, that’s the effect that Battle For Prague have! With a beautiful opening sequence ‘Hundred Feet Below’ starts off the EP. You are softly caressed with the drums and then velvety massaged with some great guitar chords. ‘Hundred Feet Below’ for some reason brings all your happy memories to the surface like a fish tank full of good times. However the song has an altogether more sombre mood if you listen carefully. The music throughout ‘Hundred Feet Below’ continues effortless, nonetheless you can identify that a lot of hard work has gone into the composition and production of this song. It has a deep meaning that when you listen to it more and more, it grows on you, so much you almost feel part of the song. A delightfully powerful song. The second song on the ‘We Could Be Anywhere’ EP is ‘I See A Ghost.’ Opening with the most delicate guitar playing, you just don’t know what to expect…just don’t try to second guess it… instead lie down and let the song connect with your soul, because it will. Greg Cox’s vocals are perfect for this song, they’re tender, they’re warm, yet they have a rough edge which contrasts well with the music. If his voice were an actual person they’d be the one you trust so much. His vocals breathe life into the song, not because the song needs life breathing into it, it doesn’t, but simply because his vocals work harmoniously with the music. The vocals are ever so tender, sung with the up most of delicateness, which combined with brilliant guitar, bass and drum work, give birth to an astonishingly great song. If this band were massive now, this would be an anthem. It will be in the future. At around half way through the track, when you think the song can’t get any more magnificent, you’re left thinking ‘blimey this is special, truly special.’ ‘The Wetlands’ takes third place on the ‘We Could Be Anywhere’ EP. Straight from the beginning it captivates the listener immediately with some fantastic guitar chords, which immediately warm your heart, just like your closest lover does. Listening to the lyrics ‘Time to stare, bruises lack of care, when good intentions, get nowhere’ it’s quite clear that Greg sings straight from the heart. His lyrics are deep, thoughtful and incredibly well thought out. As is the composition on their EP and ‘The Wetlands’ is no different. The lyrics are sung with perhaps some harsh true-life experience, some of which I’m sure we can all identify with. This is another cracking song, non-predictable, intelligently put together and recorded with soul. If you have a cold heart, listen to this song and prepare to lock it away. ‘Car/Plane/Boat’ is a much more up tempo song compared to the others on ‘We Could Be Anywhere’. This does not detract anything from Battle For Prague’s sound, instead it simply gives Battle For Prague more depth and proves they can write beautifully diverse songs. One aspect that really stands out is the drum work, Lottie the drummer is a massively talented individual. This band are tight to say the least, Lottie’s drumming just caresses your mind, then out of nowhere you feel the blissfully played guitar, this track just seems to get better and better as it progresses, at one point you’re left thinking no! This is when the track ends. You immediately hit play…. ‘Battle For Prague’ are a band that you can’t help but fall in love with. They’ll take you to that very moment when you fell in love for the first time. It’s hard to describe them really. They’re tender, yet not tedious, they remind you of early Coldplay in some respects, you get all that soul, that passion, that hunger, that heart felt emotion. What you also get is some beautifully crafted songs, call it musical genius. Some would argue they sound like Kings of Leon meeting Arcade Fire. I’d say they deserve you to cast your own judgement, there’s no need to pigeon hole them. No need to brand them, they deserve their own identity as they hold their own unique sound... If you want to follow one of ‘the’ new bands, go buy their EP, it’s currently available as a limited edition CD direct from their Myspace page. Savage Ben http://www.myspace.com/battleforprague
