The Dandy Warhols have produced some very good musical moments over the course of their rather colourful career, many of which came together to produce very good albums. Sadly, such collective greatness has long since disappeared. Their last two albums have been bloated affairs, rather self-indulgent and turgid overall, but there were still glimpses of what they were capable of; ‘Mis Amigos’ is almost one of them.
‘Mis Amigos’ is their latest single from self-released sixth album, ‘Earth To The Dandy Warhols’, and it sees The Dandy Warhols make a welcome return to their pop past, if slightly less doleful than previous efforts. Indeed ,‘Mis Amigos’ has never seen The Dandy Warhols so bouncy and chipper. It has mariachi trumpets, steel drums, Courtney Taylor-Taylor’s most interested vocal for a long time, and a general air of optimism. You would almost think they are excited to be here again.
Sadly the lyrics suggest they are still as bored as they have appeared to be ever since ‘Monkey House’, which is odd considering the music on ‘Mis Amigos’ suggests the opposite. “My friends and me, we smoke a lot, we smoke weed, and then the pot”, reads like the kind of lyrics that an uninspired singer would mumble out on the spot whilst the band are jamming the song for the first time, and then couldn’t be bothered to change them. It’s a shame, but then it rather sums up the whole album, blowing hot and cold again, if a
little more hot than on ‘Warlords of Mars’ at least.
Where ‘The Dandies’ will go from here is hard to say. It’s clear to everyone else that they need to cut out the fat, and get back to producing more focused albums. Nobody wants to hear self-indulgence, at least not when the band themselves sound so utterly blasé and disinterested as The Dandy Warhols have on the majority of their last two albums. “But we'd like to be, just good to our friends” sings Taylor-Taylor. How about being good to your fans?
