The Indian
Opening with a sublime relaxing acoustic guitar sequence you may be fooled into thinking that The Indian is somewhat subtle, in some senses it is, but don’t cast your judgement until you’ve heard it right through… it has such a backbone that it’ll get into your head like a memory that you can never forget. There are some clear influences in The Indian, but I won’t mention them, I’ll leave that to the listen to identify, what I must share with you is that this song is unique and more importantly original.
Following the beautiful guitar into, Toby Connors’ vocals drape over the acoustic guitar sequence perfectly, like white blossom falling gracefully over the ground on an autumn’s day. His vocals are guaranteed to give you goose bumps, they’re both rough and edgy, yet strangely soft and gentle, leaving you somewhat touched. He writes with deep meaning, emotion and passion, vocally painting such a strong picture that it’s almost impossible not to see what he is singing about. The lyrics are so powerful you can’t escape the emotion, The Indian is bursting with it.
Just when you think The Indian can’t change, you’re left in amazement when it bursts out of the acoustic sequence with such an almighty blast, it would give terrorists a run for their money. At this point, you’ll be jumping around like you’re on stage with the band, you just can’t escape the amount of energy that the band are projecting on The Indian; it is, in a word truly immense!
The drums are both strong and deep sounding, whilst the bass appears to bring out your soul. As do the vocals, which combined with the guitar add an outstanding edge to The Indian, which create a wall-of-sound. This touches you so deeply, it’s as if you’re being sensuously massage by hundreds of tiny angels, simply beautiful music.
Hotel Of Infidels
Quite the opposite opening to The Indian, but it far from disappoints! Hotel Of Infidels sets off with an absolute pounding of the drums thanks to the talented Scott McKnight, set alight with the superb guitar efforts from Guy Connor which add depth to Hotel Of Infidels. Toby Connor snatches control of the song with his vocals which ooze grittiness, power and a certain degree of rebellion. The song just continues to bubble away stronger and stronger like a volcano waiting to erupt…. and that’s what happens at around one minute. The song charges forward, like a swarm of angry hornets, you don’t get in its way, its taken control and you will love it. Hotel Of Infidels has such a great rhythm that you’ll want to jump into the nearest V8, slam you foot to the floor and power your way straight down Route 66 as fast as possible.
Hotel Of Infidels is like a snarling pitbull that hasn’t eaten for a week, it has such aggression. However that aggression is not negative, it translates into out-of-control passion, which carries the song forward perfectly. You then notice the guitar winding up, almost out of nowhere and my god does it sound brilliant – Guy steels the song back, sending you into an audio frenzy which can only be described as if you were on a sonic merry-go-round. This song will have you singing out loud like you are Toby Connor, or at least wishing you were.
At one stage in the song you simply hear the drums and bass guitar working symbiotically, here Kevin Martin and Scott McKnight are working off each other so tightly it’s incredible. Following this, Toby’s vocals then kick in and take the song off in another direction. This song has so many layers you’ll be hard push to predict where it’s going to go. It’s extremely cleverly put together, holding you in its teeth just like the pitbull would.
The end creeps up on you like the grim reaper would, although not silently. You don’t expect it, but unlike the grim reaper dishing out death, this song dishes out a whole load of rock and roll, this is true rock and roll, with all the attitude, power and driving force it should have!
This double single can be downloaded from iTunes and if you’re lucky enough to find a rarer than hens teeth CDS version, hold onto it! Prepared to be, a believer!
