‘Some folks say that Ava is set to be the reggae Joss Stone’, says John Masouri of Echoes magazine in November 2007. With all due respect to Mr Masouri, statements like that drive me nuts. The music industry seems to have this desire to get everyone in their box, to label and coerce them. Ava Leigh is a great vocalist. Period. It doesn’t matter that she’s white and grew up listening to the very cream of 70s reggae. It doesn’t matter that she’s young, and has worked with some of the very best in the industry (this single is produced by Future Cut). It just matters that she’s GOOD.
'
La La La' begins with the chorus "
You make me go la la la" which is disgracefully catchy. The rolling, hip-swaying reggae beat makes you nod your head, and Ava’s smooth, brilliantly produced vocals fit perfectly. It seems almost incidental when you first listen – my initial instinct was “yeah, it’s okay, but nothing special”. Then you listen again. And again. Then you switch to something else and find yourself still singing
"La la la".
Ava claims that this is one of her ‘angry’ love songs – one of those songs that tells a story that many of us know; the horrible feeling of being in a relationship that you know is wrong, but just can’t leave. What makes it even better is that the instrumental of the track is also on the single, so you can sing-along!
For me, this single is a perfect blend of reggae and pop, the sort of track that develops into a warm British summer anthem. I don’t think this will be the last we hear of Ava Leigh. You go girl.
