Philly sextet The Capitol Years are five albums old, yet this is their first single to be released this side of the pond. Should we be bothered? Based on “Revolutions” (and indeed B-side “CIA”), yes we probably should. It seems we may have been missing out.
With a guitar line that sounds like Belle & Sebastian’s “Boy With The Arab Strap”, the intro to The Capitol Years’ “Revolutions” sounds nothing like a revolution and more like pure contentment. As the vocals appear, it all turns a pinker shade of Floyd, which is always nice. The Dave Gilmour-like vocals add a dreamy quality that helps the song drift beyond mediocrity.
B-side “CIA” continues the dreamy Pink Floyd meets Midlake melancholy of “Revolutions”, but is perhaps even better, with its varying sparse guitar, the odd tinkle of the ivories, Doors-esque organ line and even breezier vocals than the A-side managed.
Hopefully now we will get to see and hear more from this band; The Capitol Years – we wish you were here.
