Sunday Best
“Thou shalt not read NME” are wise words from the bearded lyrical genius known as Scroobius Pip. It’s a shame noone will take it literally. Those of you who haven’t come across Pip’s material before should get to it right away. His lyrical content in songs is something every rapper can easily be jealous of. Teaming up with De La Soul’s Kevin Mercer (also known as Posdnuos, Mercenary, Plug One), makes this rework of Thou Shalt Always Kill a force to be reckoned with. Thou Shalt Always Kill was the duo’s debut release back in April of 2007 that reached a very respectable No.34 in the Uk Singles chart. The original is good, the rework is better. Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip have managed to create their own sub genre of Electronic/Hip Hop/Breakbeat music that appeals to a very wide audience.
With a basic drum beat, and musical bleeps reminiscent of Crystal Castles’ work, the ‘Clean Radio Mix’ and ‘De La Edit’ both have a very fresh style. Pip’s opening liner “Thou Shalt not think everyone with a beard is a terrorist” is very funny, due to the very impressive beard David Meads’ (Scroobius Pip) owns. Plug One’s lyrical delivery fits surprisingly well into the track, adding his own humour too “Thou shall not rush De La Soul into making his next album…….lemme do that again”. Other lyrical gems like “Thou shall not look at yourself mirror when your crying, your eyes all ready know” shows exactly what kind of talent these two artist have. Pip splits some of the song into sections, in a sort of rant. The “just a band” section lists some of the top artists fan’s seem to put on ‘pedestals’, on which you can agree. “Beatles, just a band, Led Zeppelin, just a band.............”. They are normal people like us, just talented and pushed into the media limelight that some people forget from time to time. Another cool section is the awareness of the non-existent musical genres, they are now just “dress codes and fashion styles”.
Friction & K-Tee’s remix is a basic drum&bass rework, nothing too impressive. It features the same drum beat Pendulum use in pretty much every single song. Production values for The Loser’s remix is of a very high standard. The bass kick sounds punchy, clicky, and wholesome. Distorted guitar riffs and cool synths follow the beat to a ‘Tee‘. Only flaws in the mix are the vocals, they seem to sit too high up but again it still sounds great. Drop The Lime punches the rework with a dirty bass line that warms your membranes but again leaves you wanting more with no real build up. Chilled out mixes are always a great buzz, Sunday Best have got it just right. The mix is warm, laid back and very impressive.
